Nicotine Replacement Therapy

NRT 4mg gum took the cravings for tobacco away!
Nicotine gum was right for me because it occupies my mouth!
Even smokers agree that smoking is a dirty habit
Nicotine Replacement Therapy products come in various formms eg, patches, gum, lozenge etc
I have avoided using some of the horrific images that are currently being used as a type of government sponsored 'aversion therapy' but this one says it all without graphic imagery!

Stopping Smoking With Nicotine Replacement Therapy

Stopping Smoking With NRT

I am not writing to plug Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) by the way but I can not deny that NRT has made quitting smoking a lot less painful and stressful than going cold turkey, for want of a better term. For me Nicotine Gum worked mainly because it gives me something to do with my mouth but for other people there are various nicotine patches, a lozenge, micro-tabs, sublingual NRT and other products to take the sting out of quitting. Depending what jurisdiction you are in, you may even be able to get your NRT products on the National Health Service but even if you cant, NRT products work out a lot cheaper, fiscally speaking at least, than smoking!

Previous to this I had read the late Alan Carr's book and theres no doubt it works for some highly motivated individuals but after reading his thoughts on other 'addictions' I found it hard to take his book seriously anymore! Carr may well be the Dale Carnegie of motivational quitting for some, but his psychobabble about other addictions is quite frankly bullsh*t!

For the serious smoker like myself who was going through two packs of cigarettes a day, Nicotine Replacement products gave me a fighting chance of giving up and provided the second half of a proven way of quitting, the first part of course being a certain degree of willpower. I have read the various advice from the National Health Service and I most definitely fitted the 'profile' of a 'heavily addicted smoker! For instance, that first cigarette in the morning was the one I craved most. Also, I disliked going anyplace where smoking was prohibitted. There are plenty of helpful resources, helplines, free dvds, websites dedicated to stopping smoking which are provided by the likes of the NHS Direct website, the various NRT product companies and they are a great help in the first few days/weeks which everyone should avail of. My attitude was that giving up smoking, or more accurately the prospect of giving up smoking is daunting enough so we should take all the help we can get and most of it is free !

It has to be said that some willpower is required when using NRT to give up smoking, mines was most definitely health based but other 'triggers' may be financial gain, social pressure, employment requirements in fact there are a myriad of reasons for giving up compared to only one for remaining a smoker ie addiction! Whatever your motivating 'trigger' you can also reap the other rewards as a direct consequence of quitting eg, I have just opened a new savings account with £100 I have saved this month, which is a welcome bonus on top of the direct health benefits that initially motivated me! Setting a date to quit is generally agreed to be an important factor in successfully quitting smoking using NRT, I just happened to have used the New Year period for it's tradition of making 'resolutions.'

I can only speak from my own personal experience as I am no expert by any means but it has not been too difficult which has amazed me as I dreaded being without a cigarette for anymore than 15 minutes! Sure, there have been temptations but munching on a piece of Nicotine Gum does a great job of deflecting those cravings in the first few days. For me personally, 4mgs gum was the only real option as thats the reccomended strength for heavy smokers but it also comes in 2mgs and even 1mgs strengths for the less dedicated tobacco devotee! It is also my understanding that Nicotine itself, the main addictive ingredient in cigarettes and of course NRT products is not a particularly good drug to be taking, but it is a hell of a lot better than the tar, carbon monoxide and other carcinogenic chemicals that one inhales when smoking as they are the nasty chemicals that will do the real damage and eventually kill you painfully! Nicotine in NRT products comes in controlled, small dosages which are free of the carcinogens associated with smoking eg, tar and God knows what else! Plus it is my experience that the therapeutic levels of nicotine in NRT gum do actually work as a mild appetite suppressant which has kept me from eating the house down!

In conclusion, it is early days yet but I am confidant that I will be successfull in staying off smoking for the foreseeable future....I think! The really amazing thing about giving up smoking is that it really is not that difficult using NRT, it is just the thought of giving up or more accurately the distorted perception of what a life without cigarettes entails that prevented me from giving up earlier! Though if I ever decide that smoking is an option again (this will obviously mean that I prefer being broke and dead) I will of course, make a point of writing the rationale behind it......if I get the chance....!

Go raibh maith agat Iðunn a chara.

It has been remarkably easy, so I can make no claims to have strong willpower or anything like that.

I just proceed on the basis of one day at a time & I can put up with anything for just one day (or one hour if need be!)

Congrats, Iskra. It gives me some hope. And I'm glad you are well now also. :)

Go raibh maith agat for your concerns mo chara.

Thankfully I got over it relatively quickly (though it didnt feel like that at the time.) There were a few mornings back then when I thought the 'end' was definitely 'nigh'...lol

I wrote an update on my progress as a non-smoker & i am happy to say i have completed 2 months cigarette free !

Best decision i have made in a very long time!

Hope you are feeling better. I noticed you haven't posted in a few days and you have to be careful with pneumonia. My grandson who is two had it recently and he had to be hospitalized for a few days but he is fine now. Of course it's always scary when children that little get sick. It's like the illness is bigger than they are.

Thanks for your comments mo chara.

Over here it costs about £10 for enough NRT gum to last at least 10 days whereas 2 packs per day of cigarettes retail is going to cost at least £12. However, dedicated smokers can pick up 'duty-free' cigarettes quite easily on the local 'grey-market.' ;)

Thankfully I am still a non-smoker though I ended up with suspected pneumonia & the worst chest infection I have ever had within this last fortnight. For a couple of days I had a bad fever & on top of that my lungs felt as if I had just smoked 100 unfiltered cigarettes..lol. Feeling a lot better now, buicheas le Dia!

I'd say it costs me about 16USD a week to smoke and it would cost me maybe 30USD a week to try to quit. About double. I've heard your reference to cutting down first recommended before. I'm glad it worked out for you.

Well, in Ireland a confirmed smoker need not always make their purchases from "above the counter." ;) Duty free cigarettes retailing at half the price are a big part of the blackmarket where we live. I was getting into my 3rd pack a day sometimes, which was worrying plus a pre-xmas blood test was reflecting that too & its been my main motivator.

Ita a pity that NRT products are so dear in the USA. Over here they are reasonably cheap or even free. I presume that the tobacco lobby in the states are a very powerful influence on prices cara?

I honestly am finding it pretty easy going & it is getting a lot easier. Its amazing how entrenched the "habit" part (as opposed to the actual nicotine addiction)of smoking ie the ritual of lighting up & the hand-to-mouth action had become, so in the first cupla days keeping the hands busy is a good idea mo chara.

Prior to actually quitting, i made a conscious effort to cut down & its amazing how few cigarettes I actually 'needed' to feed the addiction part.

I will of course, keep you updated on my progress mo chara.

Congratulations and keep us updated on your success.

I quit a few times for a few days here and there with the patches, but I have to admit I don't think I'm really ready to quit smoking yet. I suspect if I had wanted to I would have figured out how to do it.

I read your Hub on it with interest though in case I might find myself actually inspired to try again. I might try the gum next time. All the non-smoking stuff is so expensive here, it's almost cheaper to keep smoking though, particularly if you fail as epicly as I manage to do each time.

I think it's a lot cheaper to smoke here than there... at least so far! I doubt I could afford to smoke in Ireland. :p
